Simple Movements to Uplift Your Day and Bring More Light into the World
Martha Graham, the famous modern dancer, said “The body doesn’t lie.” So, the movements we make matter as do the thoughts we think. The language of the body reveals its truth. We can deny with words that we feel sorrowful, but we can see it in the posture and the bearing. Conversely, caving into ourselves and slouching and gazing downwards furthers negative thought. Close your eyes for a moment and visualize you are confronting some object of fear, such as scorpions, rats, or heights. Observe what sensations arise in your body as you visualize this fear. Then open your eyes. Perhaps you experienced tension in the jaw, a hollow pit in the stomach, frozen shoulders, or held your breath and you could not move. Think of the old adage, “I was paralyzed with fear”. Our mind and words can deny that we are fearful (most of us know those persons who might put on a bravado act in the face of a fearful situation), but the body doesn’t lie.
When you think of a joyful experience, on the other hand, we usually expand our chest and heart and open our body to the world as if to say, “I am so in love, I am walking on air.”
When we invoke a gesture of open arms, uplifted palms, and lift our hearts skyward, towards the Divine, we invite more joy and energy to enter us. So, I invite you to make this gesture of open uplifted arms in the morning sunlight each day. Then take a deep breath of air and use your creative imagination to feel divine, cosmic energy pouring down and cascading over your body.
Throughout the day, notice how you greet your neighbors or meet new people. Does your body lean towards them with a soft fold or stiffly move away from them? Is your handshake cold or warm and nurturing? Choose to make your body/mind a vehicle for spreading more love and joy in the world—smile at your neighbors and strangers and extend your arm warmly to greet them with a soft, nurturing bodily stance. Your day will be more uplifted, and you will bring a little more light into the world.
